SUmatran Tiger (Panthera Sumatrae Tigris) by: tENZINHave you ever wondered how beautiful animals disappear from the earth? The Sumatran tiger is critically endangered and may soon disappear. There are only 300-400 Sumatran tigers. Read on to learn about these amazing creatures, find out how this happened, and what is causing it. Sumatran Tigers once lived in Borneo and Sumatra, but now they became extinct in Borneo. Now they only live in the forests of Sumatra, which is part of Indonesia. They live in lowlands forests, mountain forests and evergreen swamps and tropical rain forests. Their space is very limited. Sumatran Tigers are not very good climbers. Male Pantheras have long fur around the faces, giving them a distinctive fur appearance Sumatran tigers have thinner stripes that any other tigers which helps them camouflage with the forests. Cubs learn to kill and hunt at 4 months. Their fathers don't have anything to do with raising the cubs. Sumatran Tigers are not very picky eaters. They feed on animals like birds, fish, monkeys, cattle, goats, wild boars, deer, crocodiles and last but not least, fowl. They are very patient and may stalk prey for 20-30 minutes before killing it. Like every creature, they have predators. Sadly, their predators are humans. Sumatran tigers also have threats. One of the worst ones are poaching for money, and another one is that forests are being destroyed because of the need palm oil for cookies and laundry detergent. The Sumatran Tiger is critically endangered. How did this tragedy really happen? One thing is that the habitat for the Sumatran tiger has been drastically reduced by clearing for agriculture, plantations and settlement. Mainly because of poaching. Also on many parts of the island, illegal tree cutting has been going on and forest conversion are out of control. Overall Sumatran tigers are in big danger and need some help by people to stop this. The Panthera Sumatrae tigris are in more danger than any type of tigers and are very rare, half are in safe zoos where the population might grow. Please help save them because they have no one else to depend on. |
