Golden mantled tree kangaroo The golden mantled tree kangaroo may be something that you don’t hear about every day, but this species is actually critically endangered. Read on to find out more about this amazing creature.
The tree kangaroo was discovered in 1990 in the Torricelli Mountains. They are part of the Macro pods long ago they adapted to trees and evolved through time. They have learned what fruit is in the trees and what also lives in them. It was only the second marsupial found in Indonesia, they are part of the Macro pods long ago they adapted to life in montage tropical forest. Tree kangaroos are omnivores which means that they eat meat and plants. The diet of the Golden Mantled Tree Kangaroo is from its surroundings mostly from it’s tree like the leaves and fruit. Now about the meat part tree kangaroo have been known to eat young birds. Also they collect the fruit that falls on the ground for later and they eat grains and eggs from birds. So the diet of the tree kangaroo is very fascinating to learn about and to know that there are more omnivores than just us humans. Tree kangaroos have very long tails that are about 40-87 cm which is very long for a tail but normal kangaroo do have tails too. The length of the body of the golden mantled tree kangaroo is somewhere in between 40-77cm, which is shorter than the tail. The tail must be very important to the golden mantled tree kangaroo from hanging on trees to catching fruit off the ground. The tail is an adaptation of it living in trees. Now the weight of the tree kangaroo is around 15.5kg it is this light because of it needing to be held up by it’s tail when it hangs on a tree branch. Now there is always threats to animals and unfortunately one of the biggest threats to this animal in habitat loss. Tree kangaroos have to leave their homes for when something is being built. Workers destroy the rainforest. And also people eat tree kangaroos too. These are the two most biggest threats to the golden mantled tree kangaroo. There are people out there who want to help this animal from being extinct that group is called WWF (world wildlife fund). They help critically endangered species. WWF is right now trying to promote and manage area where the golden mantled tree kangaroo lives. And they are trying to reduce hunting of the animal so they do not die and go extinct and so less are eaten and killed. And they try to complete that goal of less golden mantled tree kangaroo getting killed with programs like TRAFFIC. And they even try to raise awareness of the animal which takes a lot of courage and I hope all of this works. conclusion In the end I think all around the golden mantled tree kangaroo is one fascinating animal to know about from what it is |
