Imagine an animal that can run faster than any human, an animal that is sleek and has beautiful spotted fur. Now imagine this creature disappearing from the earth Read on to learn about the amazing Amur leopard and its habitat, characteristics, and more.
The Amur leopard once roamed a large area, but is only found in a few places today. It used to live in the Korean peninsula and Northern China but now only lives in Primorskii Krai, Russia and there are also a few in the Jilin Province in China. There are less than seventy Amur leopards left in the wild. The amur leopard is a yellowish brown with black spots. The end of their tail is black and white mixed together. The weight of a male amur leopard is 71-110 pounds. The weight of a female amur leopard 55-94 pounds. The male's height is 2.1-2.6 ft. It usually has yellow eyes. They have sharp teeth used for ripping apart prey. The amur leopard likes to stalk its prey and unlike lions they live and hunt alone. They eat roe deer, sika deer, red deer, musk deer, hares, boars, and other small animals such as badgers. They eat a lot in order to survive. The Amur leopards take one swift bite and break its prey’s neck and kill it. This species has mostly no predators at all. The reason they have no predators is because they are at the top of the food chain like the rest of the big cats. But they do have one threat, man. Hunters kill them for their spotted fur to use for rugs and clothes. Loggers cut down their home forests to make money. We also kill their prey so then the Amur leopards become hungry it has less and less to eat. Their families are pretty small. They only have about 1-4 cubs. The baby Amur leopards are weaned when they are three years old and when they turn 1 and a half to two they leave their mother. They live and usually hunt alone except for a mother and father together. Amur leopards keep the population of deer and other fast reproducing animals down. They make it safer for people by keeping the population of fast reproducing animals down. When these populations grow bigger and bigger it becomes unsafe because the animals have diseases that are not good for themselves and sometimes us as well. The amur leopards will not be around for long with only less than seventy in the wild. We do not want these nimble creatures to be extinct. They have already been named critically endangered by the IUCN. They may become extinct forever. We can help by donating to the sites such as ALTA conservation, WWF, Amur leopard and tiger Alliance , and globalgiving. The amur leopard is an amazing creature and this animal is critically endangered.
